George Zimmerman Back in Court
According to a recent New York Daily News article, Shellie Zimmerman has filed for divorce against George Zimmerman, the man who was recently seen in court for the Trayvon Martin shooting.
In response to public accusations that she filed for divorce to stay in the spotlight, Shellie stated that their relationship had been growing worse for years before the shooting. She also said that she stood by George through his trial, but after his acquittal, their relationship only got worse.
The divorce trial has not been without controversy. A few days after filing for divorce, the police department received a frantic phone call from Shellie. She claimed that her husband was threatening her with a gun. At a recent press conference, Shellie’s lawyer implied that it was not the first time Shellie had been threatened by her husband.
Currently, Shellie has no plans to press domestic abuse charges against George. If she were to bring domestic abuse charges, the case could be moved to an Integrated Domestic Violence (IDV) Court, which is set up to handle divorce and domestic abuse simultaneously. Florida and New York are among the few states that currently maintain IDV courts.
There has been some speculation that Shellie may have brought domestic abuse charges against her husband if she was able to retrieve video footage from her broken iPad. In the midst of their separation, Shellie claims that George became threatening toward her, so she started to record his outbursts using her iPad. She also claims that when he found out she was recording him, he smashed the tablet to pieces.
Shellie also claims that Zimmerman punched her father and threatened them both with a gun. On Wednesday, Shellie’s lawyer held a press conference and explained that, at this point, Shellie just wants to move on with her life. Shellie is seeking custody of their two dogs and an equitable distribution of their assets.
The case is a prime example of how many marriages come to an end. Although many are not so highly publicized, divorces generally result from years of marital troubles that boil over after a major obstacle.
