Research has shown that staying together “for the kids” isn’t always a good idea. Spouses who argue a lot often create a hostile living environment, which is typically worse for their children emotionally than if they were to separate. That doesn’t mean going through a divorce is easy, though.

It is obvious that the majority of divorces in the United States take place away from the media spotlight. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, thousands of Americans are getting divorced each year—for a variety of reasons.

Filing for divorce is never an easy decision to make. Even in cases when the quality of the marriage has deteriorated, splitting up can be a complex and traumatic time.

Going through a divorce is one of the most complex challenges that many adults in the United States will have to face. While divorce statistics are hard to measure 100 percent accurately, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claims that in 2011, there were more than 800,000 divorces and annulments in 2011.

In the eyes of the law, divorce does not discriminate between men and women. Many people believe that the courts inherently favor women during divorce and custody hearings, but officially speaking, there should be no bias present when a judge makes a ruling on these important decisions.

There are approximately 2 million marriages in the United States at present, according to research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
